The first hole is a daunting start to the round with plenty of hazards in sight, the tree line, water features and proximity to the clubhouse make for an uncomfortable start.  However, the conservative play is to use your stroke allowance to deliberately lay up short of the green leaving a very comfortable and simple short chip/pitch.

The aggressive play is to ensure that you stay away from the bunker on the right side of the green and use the width of the green complex to your advantage.  A play to the left side of the green will always leave a more favourable shot if the green is missed, but this will mean that you will need to use the tee box to your advantage and use the entire width available to cater for your shot shape and allow a comfortable amount of room for your shot bias.
